Guide · Pet portrait
A portrait of your pet, painted from a photo: how to choose.
A painted portrait is one of the loveliest tributes to a dog or a cat, whether they are asleep on the sofa right now or only in memory. There are three ways to have one made, with very different prices and timelines.
1. A painter, by hand
A painter makes the portrait on canvas, in oil, acrylic or watercolour, from your photos. It is the most expensive and the slowest: hand-painted pet portraits usually start around $89 and take weeks.
You pay for a one-of-a-kind piece. Ask to see animal portraits the artist has already made: fur, eyes and nose are what separate a good pet portrait from a generic one.
2. Digital illustration
Illustrators make digital pet portraits in many styles, from realistic to simple line work, and deliver a file to print. Cheaper and faster than canvas, in days.
A good route if you want a specific style, like minimal line or loose watercolour.
3. A digital painting made by AI
An image model paints your pet from the photos in about a minute, keeping their face, coat and markings, in a new setting. AI pet portrait gifts start around $25; it is the fastest option, and you can see it before paying.
There is no human artist: it is a digital painting generated by AI. What usually moves people is recognising the way they looked, and that depends more on the photo than on the method.
Which photo to use
The best photo has sharp eyes, taken at the pet's level, in natural light. Photos from above, with flash glare in the eyes or with the pet far away work worse.
If they have passed and photos are few, use the best you have, even old ones: send several, to show the coat and markings from different angles.
Printing and keeping it
12×16 in suits a wall and a ready-made frame; 8×10 in looks lovely on a shelf. Matte or cotton paper makes it look painted. Many people also set the portrait as their phone wallpaper, to keep them close.
Questions
- How much does a painted pet portrait cost?
- Hand-painted on canvas, from around $89 with weeks of wait. Digital illustration usually costs less and takes days. AI portraits take minutes; on Amevoli the preview is free.
- Does it work with an old or low-quality photo?
- It works best with sharp eyes and good light, but it is worth trying with what you have. Send more than one photo, from different angles, to show the coat and markings.
- Does it work for cats, birds, rabbits?
- Yes. What matters is that the photo shows the animal's face and markings clearly.
